1st Place Winner
Caden Smallcombe
"At Last"
Oil Painting
12th Grade
Artist Statement: This artwork pictures "humanity" accepting its place in nature. The painting is meant to convey the idea that we are not an exception on this planet, and we have to learn to accept where and what we belong with. I used a blend of dull yellow oil paints to go against the typical "green nature" idea to make it feel a bit more existential and otherworldly. I focused on the texture of the painting and the way the different shades communicate with each other, rather than focusing on finer details. That choice gave the painting a hazy feel that I believe fits the overall image. I wanted to draw attention to the fact that nature is bigger than us. It is something that we can shackle and call our own. It is something that holds us into our own nature.
