Over the past many years, the City of South Haven, Van Buren County, and the Michigan DNR—along with other community organizations, various Friends groups, and the South Haven Visitors Bureau—have developed and promoted the use of local land and water-based trails in the area. In 2019, South Haven was one of four communities in Michigan to be designated as a Pure Michigan Trail Town in reflection of this effort.

Over the past year, outdoor recreational use has experienced significant growth, particularly with biking.

18 Mural Bike Racks: The South Haven Center for the Arts strives to feature local artists and celebrate our town. 18 Bike racks will be fabricated from steel, based on the attached design. These racks will be provided to selected artists to be painted and then donated to the City of South Haven for display and use by the DDA and CVB (South Haven Visitor’s Bureau) in the downtown district of South Haven. The bike racks will be installed seasonally and removed for the winter by the City of South Haven and will have a sign mounted on them that will designate them as part of the South Haven Trail Town Initiative.

Artists: Artists over the age of 18 who live in Michigan are asked to submit proposals. First priority will be given to artists who live in South Haven and Van Buren County.

Project Timeline, Final Deadlines:

Proposals Due: April 26, 2021

Artist notified of selection by May 15, 2021

Bike racks available for pick-up on scheduled appointment day starting May 17, 2021

Bikes must be completed by June 9, 2021

Artist Compensation and Supply Fee: $350 will be given to each artist. $50 for supplies will be given at the start of the project. $300 will be awarded when the painted bike rack is complete.

Painting Details: The steel bike rack with be primed with a black powder coat, which will need to be sandpapered in areas to be painted, and may need a white base coat for lighter colors. Artists can use any enamel paint, and are asked to clear-coat the piece. We encourage all artists to apply and if you are using enamel on steel for the first time, we can connect you with other artists to have questions answered. We will provide an FAQ to selected artists, and ask artists to take all safety precautions when using enamel paint. We also encourage artists to share supplies if it helps limit waste.

How to Submit: Artist must submit a design using the .pdf template—rendered digitally or sketched by hand—along with a 200-word paragraph describing the design, and a 200-word bio that will be used on our website. Email the design to info@southhavenarts.org. The racks are two sided—if the design will be similar on both sides, please submit one sketch. If the sides differ in imagery, we ask that you submit two sketches so we have a complete understanding of your concept. Email is best, but if you prefer to mail your entry, please send it to South Haven Center for the Arts, 600 Phoenix St., South Haven, MI 49090. Designs will be reviewed and selected by the South Haven Center for the Arts’ Art On the Town committee.

Artist Compliance: Bike racks will be installed by the City of South Haven. Artists must complete and deliver finished bike racks to the South Haven Center for the Arts or risk breach of contract.

Please email Kerry Hagy at info@southhavenarts.org with any questions you may have.
