Winter Classes available at art center
 
You can still chase away those winter blahs by signing up for workshops at the South Haven Center for the Arts, 600 Phoenix St.
 
Openings are available in the following sessions:
 
Rebourne Reconstructed Recycled Redesigned Recycled Sweater Workshop, 6-8 p.m., Jan. 12 and 14. Instructor Marilyn Mussman will show participants how to create old sweaters into works of wonder. No experience is necessary; sewing machine is optional and one will be available to use. People should bring scissors, yarn, scrap material, heavy thread, big safety pins, vintage buttons, scrap fabric, T-shirts and a sweater or two they no longer wear. Fee $45; members receive discounts.
 
African Diaspora Dance Class (six sessions), 6:30-8:30 p.m., Mondays, beginning Jan. 18. Instructor Kama Tai says that learning the movements, modalities, rhythms and history of other lands and countries leads to inspiration and mind-opening exercises. Tai has participated in many workshops and classes with Master dancers from Guinea, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana of West Africa, Brazil, Columbia and Haiti. For three years Tai has danced with and created choreography for Dunuya Drum and Dance, a drum and dance ensemble local to southwest Michigan. $12 drop-in fee (no member discount); $50 for six sessions; members receive discount.
 
Shibori Workshop, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., Jan. 30. Instructor Jacqueline Skarritt, from Bangor, recently featured her fiber art in the Center’s Wonders of the Woven World exhibit. Participants will explore the ancient art of shape-resist dyeing and will learn five to six different folding and stitching techniques unique to the Japanese Shibori tradition. Skarritt says, “If people can thread a needle, they can create amazing artworks. The workshop is open to all ages; wear old clothes because indigo is permanent. Fee $50; members receive discount.
 
Watercolor Workshop, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Feb. 20; Instructor Jacqueline Skarritt will focus on color theory and composition with participants creating many small paintings. Participants should bring their own supplies and be prepared to learn new approaches to enhance their watercolor skills. Bring a sack lunch. Fee $50; member discount available. 
 
Basic 3D Felting, 1-4 p.m., Feb. 27. Instructor Aron Lowe (his works also were featured in the recent Wonders of the Woven World exhibit) will take participants on a fun exploration of felting in this one-day workshop. Lowe will illustrate a felted 3D heart, and he will teach embellishment techniques such as lines, dots, words. He also will introduce the more complex figural form and attach pieces, felted separately, such as a nose or ears to a face. Fee $50; supplies included; member discount available.
 
Classical Hatha Yoga Level I, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Wednesdays, is now in session. Call the Center to see if there are still openings. $12 drop-in fee, no discounts.
