Art Center premieres fiber and juried regional exhibits
South Haven, November 16, 2009 - Two “first” exhibits will be displayed at the South Haven Center for the Arts in Dec. 2009 and Jan. 2010: Wonders of the Woven World, fiber exhibit, Dec. 18 through Jan. 17, 2010, and the first annual Regional Juried Art Exhibit, Jan. 22 through Feb. 21, 2010.
The Regional Juried Art Exhibit is open to all artists, 18 years of age and older, living in Berrien, Van Buren, Allegan, Ottawa, Kent, Barry, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Cass counties. All mediums are welcome (entry fee required). Jurors for the exhibit will be Paul Flickinger, MFA of WMU Gwen Frostic School of Art, Bill Mayer, MFA of Hope College, and Brenda Snipe, MFA of Kendall College of Art & Design of Ferris State University. Prizes awarded at the Opening Reception, Jan. 22, include $500, first place, $250, second place, $100, third place.
Deadline for submitting works for the Regional Juried Art Exhibit is Dec. 4. Entrants should send images (CD or photographs which can be scanned), application and fee payment to South Haven Center for the Arts, 600 Phoenix St.
Wonders of the Woven World will trace the application of fiber and textiles as an art form using traditional and non-traditional designs. It will feature sculpture, wearable art, tapestry and art quilts as forms depicting the beauty and functionality of the medium. Artists are Geary Jones, Carol Gustavson, Anna Campbell, Ann Keister, John Koch, Leslie Riley, Jacqueline Skarritt, Midge Lewis, Sherry Konya and Aron Lowe.
Both exhibits will be open to the public, free of charge. Many works featured will be available for purchase.
On a festive note, be sure and attend the Mistletoe Market (no admission charge) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays and noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21 through Dec. 13 (seven days a week) at the Art Center (closed Thanksgiving). Enjoy shopping for unique, handmade, holiday items, in a variety of mediums, created by over 50 fine artists, and perusing books by local authors in the Book Nook. All proceeds benefit the artists and the Art Center. Local artist Roxanne Herrell will present a “make it – take it” leather activity on Nov. 21 and 22. People can enjoy making their own leather gift for that special person.
