Art Center begins Art Club for local high school students

South Haven Center for the Arts’ Program Coordinator Sarah Hess is excited about hosting a high school Art Club at the Center, beginning this month. The program is being developed in collaboration with Lisa Rostar of South Haven Public Schools.

A group of students from the South Haven High School will gather for artistic camaraderie from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, starting Nov. 19. “It will be fun to have kids creating artwork here,” says Hess. “We will be having regional artists coming to the Art Center to work with them.”

These and any other interested high school students will take part in the free interactive demonstrations and then design works in a variety of mediums which they can take home. “We will have a new artist every month,” says Hess, who is still working out the details.

On a jewelry note, there are still openings for people, ages 12 and up, to enroll in the Jewelry Soldering workshop from 6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 13, at the Art Center, according to Hess. Students will learn the basics of soldering and using a soldering iron. Instructor Sherrie Styx, a professional ceramicist who also creates jewelry and stained glass windows, will give detailed soldering iron recommendations along with demonstrations. Jump rings and earring basics will be explored as wearable art objects. Fee is $25.
