Man on a Wire - Sunday, January 10

Facilitator: Dhera Strauss, Media Producer and Film Instructor at Kalamazoo College

Enjoy this 2008 winner of hte British Independent Film Award for Best Documentary.  The film chronicles Philippe Petit's extraordinary adventure that leads to his high wire walk between the Twin Towers in 1974.  With no safety net or harness, Petit danced an hour on the wire after which he was arrested and thrown in prison.  Known only to the accomplices, the 'coup' was carried out in the most secret, intricate detail and is considered by many as the "artistic crime of the century".  View rare footage of the preparations, actual walk, with re-enactments and present-day interviews.  Directed by James March and starring Petit.

La Vie En Rose - Sunday, February 7

Facilitator:  Carol Tidwell, French and English Educator, has lived and studied in the French cities of Grenoble, Angers, and Strasbourg.

This 2007 French cinema film about the legendary French singer icon Edith Piaf is named after her signature song.  Masterfully filming the artist's life through flashbacks from within Edith's memories, the viewer sees Edith as a child in 1918, her life in a brothel and in the circus, a street performer, cabaret singer, star and her ultimate death in New York.  Actress Marion Cotillard received the Golden Globe and Academy Award for her performance, capturing Piaf's passion of singing and survival.

Outsourced - Sunday, March 14

Facilitator:  Sarah Hess, Program Cooridnator for the South Haven Center for the Arts, is a knowledgeable film viewer with a passion and critical eye for selecting independent and foreign films.

This film debuted at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival.  It is a timely modern day comedy that follows a Seattle based call center manager that is fired and then dispatched to India as a consultant to train his own replacement.  The film makers treat the story as a springboard for a smart look as the effect of cultural difference on work, friendship and love, and the global economy's impact on national and personal identity.  What could be a depressign topic turns out to be a refreshing look at positive characters with a "charming culture-clash romance" thrown in.
